Abu'l Nuqoud

Abu'l Nuqoud (unknown - 1191) was the merchant king of Damascus, and secretly a member of the Templar Order. He lived in the rich district of the city, located in Syria.

아불 뉴쿼드(불명~1191)는 다마스커스의 거상이며, 성당기사단의 비밀 단원이다. 그는 시리아에 있는 다마스커스의 부유한 동네에 살고 있다.

Abu'l was the fourth person assassinated by the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad in his quest for redemption. His death – like those of his eight Templar brothers – had been ordered by Al Mualim, the Mentor of the Levantine Assassins. 

아불은 암살자인 알타이르 이븐-라 아하드가 속죄를 위해 죽이게 되는 4번째 인물이다. 다른 8명의 형제와 마찬가지로, 그의 죽음은 레반트 지방 암살단의 스승인 알 무알림에게 보고된다.

Biography-일대기

Merchant King of Damascus-다마스커스의 거상

Abu'l Nuqoud was an abnormally large man with rich tastes and a humongous appetite. Everything he said and did was to excess. He was known to throw lavish parties, decorate his palace with gaudy works of art, and feed himself the finest foods.

아불 뉴쿼드는 호화로운 음식과 막대한 욕구를 가진 비정상적인 거인이다. 그가 말하고 행동하는 것은 모두 지나치다. 그는 사치스러운 파티를 여는 걸로 유명하여, 번지르르한 예술품으로 자신의 궁전을 장식한 뒤 최고급의 음식을 먹는다.

He hated the poor and saw them as a blight upon the land, believing them to be the source of everything wrong with the world. He took pleasure in tricking and torturing those of lesser means, and was incredibly self-centered.

Abu'l Nuqoud also loved nothing more than to remind the people of Damascus how generous he was. He knew how to throw a party, along with how to earn the favor of "those who mattered."

At some stage in his life, he joined the Templar Order and gained knowledge about the Apple of Eden and the plans the Templars had with the ancient artifact.

Death-죽음

When Altaïr sought out Abu'l Nuqoud, he learned that the merchant king had organized a lavish party at his palace for the nobility of Damascus, of which the party had been paid for with money stolen from the city's treasury.

아불 뉴쿼드를 찾던 알타이르는 거상이 도시의 금고에서 훔쳐낸 돈으로 다마스커스의 귀족들을 위해 자신의 궁전에서 호화로운 파티를 열 거라는 점을 알게 된다.

After the guests had settled down, Abu'l, speaking from his balcony, proposed a toast for their generosity. However, in the middle of his speech, he proceeded to lambaste them for their hatred and hypocrisy in supporting Salah Al'din and his war campaign. It was soon revealed that he had poisoned the wine in order to exact revenge on the people who tormented him with their cruel words and bigotry, and then ordered his men to kill anyone who tried to escape.

Following this, Altaïr took advantage of the ensuing panic to make his way after the Templar, as Abu'l tried to escape as fast as his form could carry him. Giving chase, Altaïr managed to catch up and assassinate Nuqoud.

이 직후 알타이르는 계속해서 일어나는 혼란을 이용하여 뉴쿼드에게 다가가고, 이에 뉴쿼드는 최대한 빨리 도망간다. 추격전 도중 알타이르는 그를 잡아챈 후 암살한다.

In his dying words, Abu'l told the Assassin that he had not joined the Templars for revenge, but to create a new and better world, instead of pretending to follow a god who called him an abomination. He also challenged Altaïr's willingness to strike down anyone when it was ordered by Al Mualim, remarking that Altaïr might doubt the worthiness of his cause.

죽어가는 도중에 아불은 알타이르에게, 자신은 자기를 혐오한다고 부른 신을 따르며 복수하는 대신 새롭고 더 나은 세계를 위해 성당기사단에 가입했다고 말한다. 또한 그는 알 무알림에게 명령받은 대로 누구든지 제거하는 알타이르의 자발적인 행동에 도전하여 알타이르가 자신의 동기가 가치있는가를 의심하게 되는 계기가 된다.

Personality and characteristics-성격과 특징

Abu'l Nuqoud could not bring himself to support a war for a god who labeled him an abomination. He threw large and extraordinary parties, decorated his palace with expensive works of art, and fed himself the finest foods; all while wearing expensive and luxurious clothing.

아불 뉴쿼드는 자신을 혐오스런 존재로 낙인찍은 신을 위해 전쟁을 지원하진 않았다. 그는 거대하고 터무니없는 파티를 열면서 자신의 궁전을 값비싼 예술품으로 장식했고, 최고급 음식을 먹으면서 비싸고 사치스러운 옷을 입었다.

He would even murder dozens of innocent citizens for the sake of his own pettiness and frustration, blaming them for his problems, and for talking about him behind his back.

또한 그는 자신의 편협한 성격과 좌절감을 이기기 위해 자신의 문제를 꾸짖거나 뒤에서 욕한 무고한 시민들을 죽이기도 했다.

Abu'l was an obese man, wearing velvet robes with yellow patterns and leopard print fur. His robes were usually open, which displayed his large stomach, and he wore long, loose olive colored pants with yellow shoes that pointed to a tip. He also wore a turban, decorated with a feather pinned by a brooch with a cross engraved into it, as well as multiple pearly strands with a coin pendant, and on his face, the signs of severe acne could be seen.

Altaïr: Be at peace now. Their words can no longer do harm.
Abu'l: Why have you done this?
Altaïr: You stole money from those you claim to lead. Sent it away for some unknown purpose. I want to know where it's gone and why.
Abu'l: Look at me! My very nature is an affront to the people I ruled. And these noble robes did little more than to muffle their shouts of hate.
Altaïr: So this is about vengeance then.
Abu'l: No, not vengeance, but my conscience. How could I finance a war in service to the same God that calls me an abomination?
Altaïr: If you do not serve Salahadin's cause then whose?
Abu'l: In time you'll come to know them. I think perhaps, you already do.
Altaïr: Then why hide? And why these dark deeds?
Abu'l: Is it so different than your own work? You take the lives of men and women, strong in the conviction that their deaths will improve the lots of those left behind. A minor evil, for a greater good? We are the same.
Altaïr: No, we are nothing alike.
Abu'l: Ah, but I see it in your eyes. You doubt. You cannot stop us. We will have our new world.

알타이르 : 이제 편한해져라. 그들의 말로 더 이상 고통받지 않게 될 것이다.

Trivia-기타 등등

In Arabic, "Abu n-Nuqūd" literally meant "father of the money" or "father of the coins."

아라비아어로 "아불 은-뉴쿼드"는 '돈의 아버지'나 '동전의 아버지'를 뜻한다.

Abu'l was the only target without any weapon upon him. He would only turn to fight whenever he made it to a guard tower and received a sword.

아불은 무기를 가지지 않은 유일한 목표물이다. 그는 감시탑까지 도망쳐서 칼을 받은 뒤에야 싸우려고 달려든다.

Because of some of his mannerisms (such as his style of dress), his speech about people of all kinds living together, his words about not serving the "same god that calls me an abomination," the way he caressed one of his guards, and the fact that many characters referred to him as "different," it was speculated that Abu'l was a homosexual.

뉴쿼드의 버릇(옷차림이라든지)이나 같이 살았던 사람들에 대한 발언, "나를 혐오스러운 존재로 부르는 같은 신"에겐 봉사하지 않겠다는 말, 경비원들 중 한 명을 어르는 방식, 다수의 인물들이 그를 "색다르다"라고 표현한 사실 등으로 보아 그는 동성애자라고 볼 수 있다.

Creative director Patrice Désilets stated that the production team affectionately called the merchant king their "she-male". He pointed out that the fun of a character like Abu'l is "the big party, [where] everyone is drinking, then everyone is dying, and then you've got to go and reach him and kill him from behind."

창작팀 감독 패트리스 데실렛의 말에 의하면 제작팀은 자신들의 거상을 "여자 같은 남자"로 다정하게 불렀다고 한다. 그는 아불을 두고 "모두가 술을 마시다 죽어나가는 거대한 잔치에서, 당신은 그에게 다가가 뒤에서 찔러 죽여야 한다."며 재밌는 캐릭터라고 지적했다.

Even though he appeared to be overweight and of quite old age, Abu'l could run relatively fast.

뉴쿼드는 과체중에 심각한 노안으로 나타나지만, 그의 달리기는 비교적 빠르다.

In the mobile game, he was called "Vizier Abull Aswad."
