Codex

The Codex was a thirty-page, personal journal written by the Master Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, following the death of his mentor, Rashid ad-Din Sinan. It documents his explorations into the Apple of Eden he possessed, and it offers an autobiographical view of his life and various assassination-related articles.

코덱스는 알타이르 이븐-라 아하드가 자신의 스승인 라시드 앗-딘 시난(=알 무알림, 이하 알 무알림으로 번역)이 사망한 후 30장에 걸쳐 쓴 개인적인 기록이다. 이 문서에서는 그가 소유한 에덴의 사과에 관한 탐구와 자신의 삶을 다룬 자서전, 암살과 관련된 수많은 기록을 엿볼 수 있다.

History-역사

High Middle Ages-중세 중기

Shortly after the death of Rashid, Altaïr began writing the Codex. Throughout most of his life Altaïr wrote about important aspects of his life in his journal, including the ongoing war between the Assassins and Templars, and more importantly information obtained from the Apple of Eden.

Altaïr was able to improve the Assassin Order's methods of assassination, as well as invent several weapons, one of them being the Hidden Gun. Eventually, near age 92, Altaïr completed the Codex.

알타이르는 암살권총을 포함한 다양한 무기를 발명하여 암살단의 암살방법을 향상시킨다. 그리고 92세가 될 무렵 코덱스를 완성한다.

Across the world-서양에서 동양으로

During the Mongol siege of Masyaf in 1257, Altaïr bequeathed the Codex and five seals to Niccolò Polo for safe keeping. Two days later however, a Mongol raiding party intercepted Niccolò and his brother as they were fleeing, and took possession of the Codex.

Years later, the Codex was passed back into the possession of the Polo's when Niccolò's son, Marco, retrieved it from the court of Genghis Khan. Marco in turn handed it to the Assassin Dante Alighieri, who passed it into the safe-keeping of his apprentice, Domenico Auditore. The Codex was eventually and deliberately broken apart and scattered whilst aboard a ship in Otranto harbour, so as to prevent its capture by drunken pirates hired by the Templars.

Renaissance-르네상스 시기

After the pages of the Codex were scattered, the Assassins attempted to bring them together, but by 1476 were only successful in locating six pages. In this year, however, Ezio Auditore took up his father's duty as an Assassin and, by 1499, had succeeded in locating and bringing together all thirty pages scattered across Italy. Each page was encrypted, and the only persons capable of deciphering it were Ezio's late father, Giovanni Auditore, and Ezio's friend, the artist and inventor, Leonardo da Vinci.

Hidden in the Codex was a prediction of the arrival of a "prophet" who would bring together two Pieces of Eden to open the Vault, as well as a map of the world marked with the locations of various Vaults. After the Borgia siege on Monteriggioni, the Codex was once more separated.

코덱스에 숨겨진 예언은 바로 에덴의 조각 두 개를 결합하여 '저장고'의 문을 열게 될 "선지자"의 강림을 예고하는 한편, 저장고들의 위치를 알려주는 지도 역할도 했다. 보르지아 가문의 군대가 몬테리치오니를 침략하는 동안 코덱스는 또다시 분해된다.

Modern era-현대

By the early 21st century, the Codex pages had once again been separated; many pages resided in the hands of private collectors, likely Templars, whilst some were on display in public museums, such as one on display in a library in Florence.

21세기 초반에 코덱스가 다시 한 번 분해되었고, 각 장은 성당기사단을 비롯한 개인 수집가들의 손에 들어가거나, 공공 박물관 내지 피렌체의 도서관에 전시된다.

I have spent days with the artifact now. Or has it been weeks? Months? I can no longer be certain...The others come from time to time – offering food or distraction. They say I should separate myself from these studies... Malik has even suggested I abandon them entirely. But I am not yet ready to turn away. This Apple of Eden will be understood. It must be...Is it a weapon? Is it a catalogue? Is it somehow both? "He who increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow..." The philosophy of such a statement I can understand... But for it to be truth – literally true? A society that waged wars with ideas and information in place of steel and swords...Its function is simple. Elementary, even. Dominion. Control. But the process... the methods and means it employs... THESE are fascinating. Those subjected to its glow are promised all that they desire. It asks only one thing in return: complete and total obedience. And who can truly refuse? It is temptation incarnate. I remember my own moment of weakness when confronted by Al Mualim, my confidence shaken by his words. He, who had been like a father, was now revealed to be my greatest enemy. Just the briefest flicker of doubt was all he needed to creep into my mind. But I vanquished his phantoms – restored my self-confidence – and sent him from this world. I freed myself. But now I wonder... Did I really? For here I sit – desperate to understand that which I swore to destroy. This is why: The Apple has a tale to tell. I sense the flickers of something – great and dangerous... We are all at risk. It is my duty to do something about it. I must not – cannot – turn away until I've found the truth.

난 지금 유물을 연구하느라 며칠을 보냈다. 아니 몇 주, 몇 달인가? 더 이상 셀 수도 없다...다른 사람들이 음식을 먹으라거나 방해하는 둥 시간을 허비했다. 나더러 그 연구 좀 관두라고 말했다...말릭(어쌔신 크리드 1편에서 알타이르와 투닥투닥했던 말릭 알-사이프를 말함)은 아예 그걸 내다 버리라고 했다. 하지만 난 그걸 포기할 준비가 되지 않았다. 에덴의 사과에 대해 깨우치게 될 것이다. 어쩌면...무기인가? 아니면 목록? 혹은 둘 다일지도? "지식과 슬픔을 쌓아가는 자..." 이러한 구절의 사상만 이해할 수 있다...하지만 그게 사실이라면, 글자 그대로 사실이지 않을까? 칼과 갑옷 대신 이상과 정보에 근거한 전쟁 중인 사회라면...이것의 기능은 간단하다. 매우 기본적이다. 지배. 그리고 억제. 하지만 이 과정...그리고 방법과 수단...매혹적인 것들이다. 이 빛나는 물건이 그 모든 것을 통제하면서 모두의 욕망을 보증한다. 그 댓가는 단 하나, 완벽한 복종이다. 그 누가 정말로 거절할 수 있겠는가? 실체화된 유혹이다. 알 무알림과 마주쳤을 때, 그의 말에 내 자신감이 흔들렸던 약한 순간을 기억한다. 나에겐 아버지와 같았던 인물이 이제 내 최악의 적임이 드러났다. 의심의 눈초리가 오래가지 않았던 것은 그가 내 마음에 잠식해가고 있었기 때문이었다. 하지만 그의 환영을 극복하여 자신감을 되찾았고, 그를 이 세상 밖으로 보내버렸다. 하지만 아직도 궁금하다...정말 내가 해낸 건가? 여기 앉아서, 부숴버리겠다고 약속한 것에 목을 매고 있는 상황이다. 그 이유는 이 사과에 이야기가 담겨 있기 때문이다. 매우 대단하면서도 위험한 빛을 느꼈다...우리 모두 위험하다. 이걸 해결하는 게 나의 사명이다. 진실을 찾기 전까진, 절대로 포기해서는 안 된다.

What follows are the three great ironies of the Assassin Order: (1) Here we seek to promote peace, but murder is our means. (2) Here we seek to open the minds of men, but require obedience to a master and set of rules. (3) Here we seek to reveal the danger of blind faith, yet we are practitioners ourselves.
I have no satisfactory answer to these charges, only possibilities... Do we bend the rules in service to a greater good? And if we do, what does it say of us? That we are liars? That we are frauds? That we are weak? Every moment is spent wrestling with these contradictions and in spite of all the years I've had to reflect, still I can find no suitable answer... And I fear that one may not exist.
Nothing is true. Everything is permitted. Does our creed provide the answer, then? That one may be two things – opposite in every way – simultaneously? And why not? Am I not proof? We of noble intentions, possessed of barbaric means? We who celebrate the sanctity of life and then promptly take it from those we deem our enemies?

암살단에서 떠나지 않는 중대한 모순이 3개나 있다. 첫째, 우리는 평화를 추구하지만 그 방법은 살인이다. 둘째, 우리는 인간의 마음을 열고자 하지만 대장에게 복종하고 규칙을 지키라고 한다. 셋째, 우리는 맹목적인 신념의 위험성을 알리려 하지만 우리 역시 초심자일 뿐이다.

나는 이 문제에 대해 가능성만 찾았을 뿐, 만족스러운 대답을 찾진 못했다...더 나은 가치를 위해 규칙을 굽힐 것인가? 또 그렇게 한다면, 우리는 무슨 말을 듣게 될까? 위선자들이다? 협잡꾼들이다? 나약하다? 매 순간마다 이 모순을 해결하려고 수 년 동안이나 심사숙고했지만 아직도 이거다, 할 만한 해답을 찾지 못했다...어쩌면 그 해답이 존재하지 않는 건 아닐까 두렵다.

진실은 없다. 모든 것이 허용된다. 그러면 우리의 신조가 해답이 될 수 있을까? 이건 두 가지 의미를 담고 있지만, 두 가지가 동시에 서로 부정되지 않는가? 왜 그렇지 않은가? 증명할 수 없는 건가? 우리는 고귀한 목적을 가지고 있지만 야만적인 수단에 사로잡혀 있지 않은가? 우리는 생명의 존엄함을 찬양하는 한편, 적들을 판단할 땐 그 존엄성을 즉시 무시하지 않는가?

Who were The ones That Came Before? What brought them here? How long ago? Centuries? Millenia? Longer still? So little remains of them... What drove them out? What of these artifacts? Messages in a bottle? Tools left behind to aid and guide us? Or do we fight for control over their refuse, giving divine purpose and meaning to little more than discarded toys?

"먼저 온 자들"이란 누구인가? 그들을 여기로 데려온 존재는 무엇인가? 얼마나 오래 되었는가? 수 세기? 수 천년? 그 이상? 밝혀진 게 너무 없다...그들을 추방한 존재는 무엇인가? 이 유물들은? 병에 담긴 메시지는? 우리를 돕고 이끌기 위해 남겨진 도구인가? 아니면 그들이 쓰다 버렸을 뿐인 장난감에 신성한 의미를 둬가면서 그걸 지키기 위해 싸워야 하나?
