Robert de Sable may be dead, but his brotherhood survives. Though less conspicuous in appearance, I fear they remain a threat. Where once they proudly walked the streets – making for easier targets – now they retreat into the shadows. It grows difficult to track them. What wicked things will they weave in the darkness? Our work will be all the more complicated for it.
Already there are rumors of a movement on Cyprus. I will have to investigate...It's made me realize that our tactics, too, must change. It means an end to our fortresses. To our penchant for spectacular displays of public assassinations. We must weave our webs quietly. And we must do so differently than we have in the past.
Though I ask my brothers now to abandon their rituals, I do not ask that they abandon the creed. THIS is what makes us Assassins. Not the removal of a finger. Not a false promise of paradise. Not the prohibition of poison. Our duty is to the people, not to custom. If we must sneak, we shall sneak. If we must use poison, we shall use poison. If our blades can be used without removing fingers, we shall not demand they be taken. And we shall not manipulate our initiates with lies and parlor tricks. We shall speak plainly and honestly. We shall be made anew...

로베르 드 사브레는 죽었겠지만, 그의 형제들은 살아남았다. 겉으로는 잘 드러나지 않지만, 이들이 위험요소가 될 것 같아 두렵다. 그들은 암살하기 쉬우라고 자랑스럽게 거리를 돌아다녔지만, 이제 그들은 그림자 속으로 숨었다. 그 때문에 놈들을 추적하기가 더 어려워졌다. 암흑 속에서 놈들이 꾸미는 것은 무엇인가? 우리의 모든 일 역시 더욱 복잡해질 것이다.

형제들에게 이제 그들의 관습을 버리라고 요구했지만, 차마 신조까지 버리라고 하진 못했다. 그것이야말로 우리가 암살단이라는 증거이다. 손가락을 자르는 것은 아니요, 낙원에 대한 거짓된 약속도 아니며 독을 써서는 안 된다는 맹세도 아니다. 우리의 의무는 사람들을 위한 것이지, 관습을 위해서가 아니다. 훔쳐야만 한다면 훔치겠다. 독을 써야만 한다면 독을 쓰겠다. 손가락을 자르지 않고서도 암살검을 쓸 수 있다면, 꼭 손가락을 자르라고 하지도 않겠다(이 부분은 어쌔신 크리드 2에서 알타이르의 코덱스를 해독한 레오나르도 다 빈치가 암살검을 쓸 때 손가락을 자르지 않아도 되게끔 개량한다). 그리고 우리의 신입회원들을 거짓과 행사용 미사여구로 조종하지 않겠다. 우리는 명백하고 솔직하게 말할 것이며, 새로이 탄생할 것이다...

I had thought Adha would be the one to lead me to rest, that I might lay down my blade and live as a normal man. But now I know such dreams are best left to sleep...Her face. I try to banish it from my mind as I remember the days and nights during which I chased her Templar captors across the sea. I almost got to them in time. Almost. If I had only been faster. Instead, I held her lifeless body in my arms – saw the terror reflected in her fixed, unblinking eyes...I hunted each man – one by one – until all responsible were gone from the world. But there was no joy in this. No satisfaction or release. Their deaths did not bring her back. Did not heal my wounds. After that, I was certain I would never again feel for a woman as I had for her.
I am fortunate to have been wrong.

아드하(어쌔신 크리드 : 알테어 연대기에 나오는 여성. 일명 "성배"라고도 불리지만 성당기사단에게 납치된 후 사망한다)라면 내가 암살검을 내려놓고 일반인으로서 쉬게끔 해 줄지도 모른다. 하지만 이제 그녀의 얼굴이 잠을 자기에 좋은 꿈들이라는 걸 안다. 그녀를 납치한 성당기사단의 악당들을 쫓아 바다를 건너는 동안, 내가 기억하는 낮이건 밤이건 그녀의 얼굴을 생각하지 않으려고 애썼다. 거의 때맞춰 놈들을 잡는 데 성공했다. 거의. 조금만 더 빨랐더라면. 덕분에 그녀의 생기가 없는 육신을 내 팔로 안았고, 그녀의 깜박이지 않는 눈에 비친 공포를 보았다. 그녀를 죽게 한 놈들이 지구상에서 사라질 때까지 모든 놈들을 한 번에 한 놈씩 추적했다. 하지만 전혀 즐겁지 않았다. 만족감이나 해방감 역시 없었다. 놈들을 죽인다고 해서 그녀가 살아 돌아오진 않는다. 내 상처도 치료할 수 없다. 그 일이 벌어진 후, 나는 아드하에게 가졌던 것과 같은 감정을 다른 여자에게 쏟지 않겠다고 맹세했다.

하지만, 운이 좋게도 나는 틀렸다(어쌔신 크리드 1편 이후 마리아 서프와 연애하게 된 것을 뜻한다).

Why can they not stand hand in hand? So many believe the world was created by the hand of a divine power – but I see only the designs of a madman, bent on celebrating destruction and desperation. Our origins seem chaotic. Unintended. Purpose and being instilled solely by the passage of time. Imposed first by nature – and later men...

왜 우리는 본능적으로 폭력에 저항하는가? 생명체 사이에서 벌어지는 상호작용에 대해 공부했다. 살아남으려는 본능적 욕구는 다른 생명체의 죽음을 요구한다. 왜 손에 손잡고 살아갈 수는 없는 걸까? 많은 사람들은 세상이 신성한 힘의 손에서 만들어졌다고 믿지만, 나는 미친 사람의 계획과 파멸과 절망을 찬양하는 경향만 보았다. 우리는 태생적으로 무질서한 것 같다. 의도가 없거나. 의지와 주입받는 것은 오로지 시간의 흐름에 달려 있다. 처음엔 자연에게 강요받고, 그 다음은...인간에게 강요받으니까...

Over time, any sentence uttered long and loud enough becomes fixed. Becomes a truth. Provided, of course, you can outlast the dissent and silence your opponents. But should you succeed – and remove all challengers – then what remains is, by default, now true.
Is it truth in some objective sense? No. But how does one ever achieve an objective point of view? The answer is you don't. It is literally, physically impossible. There are too many variables. Too many fields and formulae to consider. We can try, of course. We can inch closer and closer to a revelation. But we'll never reach it. Not ever...
And so I have realized, that so long as The Templars exist, they will attempt to bend reality to their will. They recognize there is no such thing as an absolute truth – or if there is – we are hopelessly under-equipped to recognize it. And so in its place, they seek to create their own explanation. It is the guiding principle of their so-named "New World Order"; To reshape existence in their own image. It is not about artifacts. Not about men. These are merely tools. It's about concepts. Clever of them. For how does one wage war against a concept?
It is the perfect weapon. It lacks a physical form yet can alter the world around us in numerous, often violent ways. You cannot kill a creed. Even if you kill all of its adherents, destroy all of its writings – these are a reprieve at best. Some one, some day, will rediscover it. Reinvent it. I believe that even we, the Assassins, have simply re-discovered an Order that predates the Old Man himself...

시간이 흐르면서, 충분히 길고 크게 언급된 말들은 고정되어 진실이 된다. 당연하겠지만 그대가 반대자들보다 오래 살아서 경쟁자들을 침묵시킨다면, 그대 역시 진실이 된다. 그러니 성공하고 싶거든, 모든 도전자를 제거하라. 그러면 기본적으로 남은 것이 진실이 된다.

객관적인 판단에 근거한다면 진실인가? 아니다. 그러면 어떻게 하면 개인이 객관적인 시각을 가질 수 있을까? 대답은 "안 된다"이다. 글자 그대로도, 실제로도 불가능하다. 변수가 너무 많다. 또한 고려해야 하는 분야와 절차가 너무 많다. 물론 우리는 시도할 수 있다. 신탁에 조금씩 다가설 수는 있지만, 절대 다다르지 못하리라. 절대로...

그리하여 난 깨달았다. 성당기사단은 그들이 존재하는 동안 자기들의 의지대로 현실을 조작하려고 시도할 것이다. 그들은 순수한 진실이 존재하지 않고, 설령 있다 하더라도 그럴 리 없다고 깨달은 반면, 우리는 그걸 깨닫기엔 절망적일 만큼 배우지 못했다. 그리고 성당기사단은 그 진실에 자신들만의 설명을 만들어내려고 했다. 그들은 지도하는 방침답게 "뉴 월드 오더(음모론의 요소들 중 하나이며, 지구상 전체 인구의 2/3가 죽어야 나머지 1/3가 산다는 논리로 유명하다)"라고 이름붙인 뒤 자신들의 형상에 따라 생활방식을 바꿨다. 이 방침은 유물이나 인류에 관한 게 아니라 그저 도구, 개념일 뿐이다. 그들의 영리함을 나타낸다. 개념에 반대하는 전쟁이 어디 있는가?

완벽한 무기다. 물리적인 형태는 없지만, 종종 난폭한 방법을 이용하여 우리 주위의 세계를 수 차례 바꿀 수 있다. 그대는 신조를 없앨 순 없다. 설령 모든 추종자를 죽이고 모든 기록을 삭제할 수도 없다. 고작 늦추는 게 전부이다. 훗날 누군가가 다시 발견하여 발명하리라. 나는 우리 암살단이 그저 노인(알 무알림?)보다 앞서 재발견했을 뿐이라고 믿는다.
